What’s grosser
than goo, poo and slippery slime? Animal
Grossology,
of course! Opening January 30, this new hands-on
exhibit adapted from science teacher Sylvia Branzei’s
best-selling children’s series Grossology,
brings to life some of the slimiest, stinkiest
and downright yuckiest creatures on Earth.
Oozing with disgusting hands-on science and interactive games, Animal
Grossology examines some of the grossest members of the animal kingdom,
from vomit munchers
and slime makers, to blood suckers, dookie lovers and more!
It
comes in all sizes, textures and shapes, but “poo” provides answers
to many of our animal mysteries. Discover who’s being a party pooper in
the penguin pen, and learn why the dung beetle is nature’s pooper scooper
when you participate in the Dung Ball Rally.
Leeches may seem gross, but did you know they are used after after some surgeries
to assist in the healing process? Examine a number of blood-sucking critters
and discover how and why they suck blood. Learn what type of health issues these
creatures present and how you can protect yourself from diseases transferred
by ticks, mosquitoes and more. In Transfusion Confusion, learn the four different
blood colors and match the blood to the animal.
Ever get slimed? Actually, slime is a very important ingredient for some animals
providing many important functions from facilitating motion, to digestion and
even defense. Play the Slime Game and vote for the slimiest critter, dive into
the ocean and take an underwater or have a “touchy feely” experience
with something squishy, scratchy, spiny and scaly. Learn why scientists are studying
slug and snail slime production for clues in treating cystic fibrosis.
Prepare yourself for some exciting detective work in Vomit Munchers. Did you
know that cows are one of the gassiest animals on earth? Visit the Chew, Chew
Express where you’ll learn how a cow uses four stomachs to aid in digestion.
Try the Pellet Purge to discover what an owl had for lunch and recreate an entire
skeleton from one owl pellet. Discover why a fly might need a barf bag to perform
a taste test and learn why Fluffy hacks up those balls of fur.

Sometimes science can be sticky, icky, slimy and spectacular!

side of science!
